Decommissioning - Now's the Time

04 Sep 2019, 10:00 - 12:00

Room 2b

Hundreds of billions of dollars will be spent on decommissioning over the next few decades, bringing new opportunities to innovate, reduce costs and develop valuable expertise and skills. In this session, we will look at emerging best practices. We will start by focusing on a selection of case studies which showcase what is an increasing number of exceptional performers. We will then explore how these positive lessons learned are being transferred to other operators and how work programmes can best be co-ordinated. We will look at how technology is offering further game-changing potential. In particular, the wells plug and abandonment area where almost half of the cost lies, and how operators, supply chain and regulators are already working together in new ways to expedite technology. The session will also explore how exciting new business models are being developed to drive innovation and how some of this new mindset is being borrowed from other industries. In addition, our diverse panel will address questions, including how to attract the next generation of people into the decommissioning industry and why it should be seen as an exciting area to rival any other.
